BRIDGE

This is a joint entry, along with the office of Jason Spiliotakos Architects, in an open competition by RIBA for the design of a footbridge in Sheffield, UK. The bridge crosses the Sheffield Parkway and links an industrial and residential area with a woodland park. Its design had to accommodate cyclists, pedestrians and horses. Our proposal was based on a single brushstroke. A strong, dynamic line that emphasizes the lightness of the shape, giving the bridge a strong visual identity. The structure provides a unique reference point to the area, supporting the effort to attract development and help unify the two sides of the Sheffield Parkway. The proposed footbridge consists of a steel arc fixed to two reinforced concrete embankments, offering a feeling of stability to its users. Lighting channels follow the curvature of the structure over and under the bridge emitting a soft glow and creating a unique lighting solution. The study received a commendation -came 3rd- in the category “Best Design Study of the Years 2008-2010" at the ΔΟΜΕΣ 2011 Awards.
