The renovation sought to add modern features while respecting the building’s omnipresent design heritage. Particular attention was given to the communal areas such as the imposing central corridor and the otherwise highly social space of the kitchen. The overall colour scheme revolves around light tones on the walls, interrupted by intense colour spots either from the furniture or the art pieces. The details on the walls, ceilings and doors were preserved and highlighted, juxtaposing the introduced modern furniture and joinery. All of the original metalwork pieces of the house were restored along with the old hardwood flooring. Its monolithic two-storey structure with its small openings and the characteristic buttress give it an almost anthropomorphic status. The design began with a detailed mapping of the building and the morphological elements that make it unique. The architectural approach respected the sensitive environment of the settlement while ensuring the integration of modern elements. On the ground floor, all the vaulted spaces maintain their integrity and now house the sleeping quarters, a living room, the kitchen and the bathroom. The semi-outdoor space that accommodated the woodstove oven, is now enclosed and serves as the ground floor’s kitchen and dining room. Small openings are punctured on the inner stone longitudinal wall of the living room to direct natural light into the spaces behind it. The stone walls were plastered up to the height of the vaulted ceilings, while the stonework was been pointed with a light-colored grout. On the first floor, in place of the small successive rooms, a single open plan layout was introduced under the pitched wooden roof. The kitchen and bathroom areas are located beneath the inner loft, accessible by a sliding staircase. The bedroom is isolated behind a blue wooden partition. The original external stone paved ramp connects the floor directly to the settlement and the ground floor while an external metal staircase joins the upper floor with the garden. The design of the residence aspires to create a domestic environment that, despite being embedded in the urban fabric, maintains the qualities of a detached house: abundant light, privacy, and direct contact with outdoor space. The monolithic exterior was largely preserved, with the only major addition being a new rear living room volume, discreetly distinguished through materials and color. A glazed connector with a metal bookcase brings daylight into the center of the plan. Warm, earthy materials define the interiors—chestnut wood carpentry, timber flooring, mint accents, and black metal details. Social spaces (kitchen, dining, living) occupy the rear of the ground floor and open to the garden and pool, while more private uses—study and bedrooms—remain within the original footprint and are accessed via the preserved wooden staircase. The ground floor hosts living areas, kitchen, dining and auxiliary spaces, with an office and guesthouse positioned 0.50 m lower. The upper floor contains the master bedroom and opens onto the guesthouse roof terrace. The design draws from the island’s vernacular architecture and its Peloponnesian influences, reinterpreting them through contemporary proportions and restrained material choices. An elongated dressed-stone volume anchors the building to the landscape, intersected by a smaller white lime-plastered volume; dual and single-pitch roofs tie the composition together. A metal pergola shades the eastern façade, while the pool aligns with the natural topography and views toward Cape Maleas, establishing a clear axial relationship between interior and landscape. Landscape interventions remain minimal: restoration of the traditional dry-stone wall, discreet pathways, shaded parking, and two new gates. The project maintains the original terrain, local vegetation, and the Mediterranean character of the site. The fundamental objective of the project was to strategically design for living, within a striking yet challenging natural landscape. Carved directly from the rock, the structures seamlessly blend into it, becoming an extension of the landscape. The interior experience unfolds as a series of interconnected spaces that draw the landscape inward through carefully selected materials and curated views, seamlessly blending the natural surroundings with the interior. Designed for a family of four, the complex consists of the main two floor living quarters and a guest house adjacent to the swimming pool. Chosen for their aging quality and local vernacular looks, materials like quarried stone and colored lime blend with the simple, monolithic volumes that refer to the Cretan building typology. A high wall is situated in the north-east part of the plot, protecting the building from the local prominent winds while also serving as a privacy barrier. The general spatial arrangement follows the ground contours so the local landscape is not overworked and is being developed in three levels. On the upper level, there are the swimming pool and the guest house, overlooking the main house’s terrace and the exquisite view towards the open sea. Moving down a level, the living and dining rooms, the kitchen and a small office are found. A great veranda, conveniently situated next to the kitchen offers great views while also providing with a shaded outdoor area. Finally, the bedrooms and all of the storage rooms are located in the lower level. A previously fragmented floor was reorganized through a 70-meter linear circulation axis that defines the spatial logic, clarifies scale, and structures departmental zones. Transparent partitions and low wooden furniture articulate boundaries, while executive offices and support areas are discreetly integrated along the periphery. A generous entrance is framed by four glass meeting rooms and a luminous ceiling membrane that simulates daylight. At the eastern end, a buffer zone hosts a a monochromatic communal area, and a terrace for informal gatherings. Warm tones and domestic references contrast with industrial elements such as exposed concrete columns and linear aluminum ceilings. The interior draws inspiration from 2001: A Space Odyssey: a glossy white central ceiling defines the plan, reflected in the floor’s tonal shift. A white entrance table doubles as reception and workspace, while a curved blue metal wall separates breakout and seminar zones. A circular lounge anchors the opposite side of the space. Meeting rooms feature oak cladding, exposed Zoellner slabs, and movable partitions for flexible configurations. It consists of two parallel zones, one for office use and the second for storage. Sustainability and rationality were two key elements of the design. The structure is located in Metamorphosi and it is made out of steel covered externally with aluminum insulating panels. The shading of the building's facades is achieved with the use of a horizontal louvers system. Their movement is adjusted automatically with the use of sensors that monitor the sun's position. At the front side of the plot and along the building's main facade there is an outdoor water pool providing passive cooling during summer and working as an emergency water tank in case of a fire. The building is developed in three levels and is a typical example of Athens' neo-classic architecture, dating back to the beginning of 20th century. The basic ideas behind the new design were: - simplification of the building's shell through the use of single coloring on the exterior surface and the creation of open spaces inside, replacing the existing small rooms and various compartments - successful implementation of modern amenities and functions in an old neoclassic building - creation of clear forms, inside and outside, with long, clear lines and continuous spaces - flexibility in function and allowable activities The construction process involved, among other things, the reinforcement of the structural system, the replacement of the wooden roof, the placement of new doors and windows and the restoration of unique architectural elements through the use of modern conservation techniques. Located in an old office building, in the heart of Athens, the four star hotel aims to transcend the contemporary approach to hotel design. The six floor building is extensively reinforced and renovated in order to accommodate 100 bed spaces, along with a co-working place, shared amenities, a gym and many outdoor common areas. The needs of the new uses dictated bold architectural movements and heavy structural reinforcement. The two existing building volumes are connected through a steel bridge and staircase. The front façade is elongated and the existing grid of the slabs and columns is revealed by creating big openings with balconies and folding panels. The proposal introduces a small museum, theatre, workshops, exhibition spaces, library, local shops, and generous outdoor areas for sports and recreation. Rather than reconstructing or overwriting the ruin, the project establishes a dialogue between the factory’s industrial character and the new architectural additions. The concrete frame remains exposed, the 48-meter brick tunnel oven becomes a permanent exhibit, and the saw-tooth roof with skylights is preserved. New red steel-framed windows follow the rhythm of the originals. At the urban scale, a piazza is formed between the three wings, overlooking the restored 38-meter chimney, while the surrounding park hosts an outdoor theatre and extensive green spaces for community use. The design studies were funded by the Athanasios and Marina Martinos Foundation and donated to the municipality. The bridge crosses the Sheffield Parkway and links an industrial and residential area with a woodland park. Its design had to accommodate cyclists, pedestrians and horses. Our proposal was based on a single brushstroke. A strong, dynamic line that emphasizes the lightness of the shape, giving the bridge a strong visual identity. The structure provides a unique reference point to the area, supporting the effort to attract development and help unify the two sides of the Sheffield Parkway. The proposed footbridge consists of a steel arc fixed to two reinforced concrete embankments, offering a feeling of stability to its users. Lighting channels follow the curvature of the structure over and under the bridge emitting a soft glow and creating a unique lighting solution.
